The BASF project comprises a Class G2 greenhouse complex dedicated to biotechnological research into genes that increase crop yields, enhance crop resistance to drought stress, and reduce the need for fertilizers.

The greenhouse has been designed to maximize the use of natural daylight. To achieve this, anti-reflective double glazing is used, and a hybrid greenhouse structure has been developed with small sections to minimize shading and maintain a constant clear height. Particular attention has been paid to energy efficiency, optimal climate control, and sustainable water management. The greenhouse is insect-proof and complies with the stringent G2 biosafety requirements.

All operations involving the 20,000 to 30,000 plants, including transport and plant care, are fully automated. As a result, the greenhouse operates autonomously, requiring only limited human intervention.

The Flemish research institute VIB acquired the site in 2021 to transform it into an agri-biotech incubator for start-ups involved in the future of agriculture and sustainable food production.
